The Pacific
Northwest branch of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences
(NARAS), a non-profit arm of the Recording Academy, hosted Studio Summit
2001 at Seattle Center on Sunday, September 9th. The event brought together
studio owners, engineers, producers and artists from all over the Pacific
Northwest.
This year’s keynote speaker was legendary producer Nile Rodgers whose
well-delivered presentation and following Q&A were heard by all thanks
to a pair of SRM450s. Rodgers'
career has spanned several decades working with such diverse artists as
David Bowie, Duran Duran, All-4-One, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, the B-52's,
Chic, Diana Ross, Madonna, Slash and many others.
Following the keynote, NW luminaries representing the region lead a roundtable
discussion with attendees on issues of importance to the recording industry.
Panelists included Mackie’s
own Keith Olsen who has worked with such artists as Ozzy Osbourne,
Heart and Fleetwood Mac. Other panelists included Glenn Lorbiecki (Violent
Femmes, Tony Gable and 206 Band), Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney), Steve
Fisk (Pigeonhed, Nirvana, Maktub), Funk Daddy (E 40, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Cool
Nutz), Valerie Biggin (studio manager, Mushroom Studios, Vancouver, B.C.),
Bill Oskay (Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer, Nightnoise) and special guest
Leslie Lewis (Executive Director of the Recording Academy's Producers
and Engineers Wing).

highlight of the event was the studio trade-table room that presented
Mackie with an ideal opportunity for some blatant product promotion. On
display was the “It’s so easy even an infant can use it”
HDR24/96 hard disk recorder/editor
(optional baby attachment sold separately).
For this year’s “Gear Games” contest, a Mackie 1402-VLZ
Pro was up for grabs. At the end of the day, Mark Cavener of Toaster
Audio in Seattle walked home with the coveted 1402. Congratulations Mark!
