Mackie's Onyx 1640 Mixer Makes The Job Easy For Producer Jim Lowe
UK - January 2005– When producer Jim Lowe began looking for a cost-effective desk that could be used to record bands during rehearsal sessions he immediately thought of Mackie knowing that he would find exactly what he wanted from within its range of analogue mixers.
"I was looking for an easy and affordable way to record bands in rehearsal situations, without having to compromise on quality," he explains. "Mackie desks are renowned for their good EQ and mic amps, so the company's range was an obvious place to begin my search."
Lowe, who has recently produced and engineered a new album for the Stereophonics, chose an Onyx 1640 with FireWire option. This 16-channel small-format analogue mixer is the flagship of Mackie's new Onyx range. And like the rest of the Onyx line, it's packed with new features, including an innovative 24-bit/96khz FireWire 1/0 option that allows it to stream multi-channel audio directly into a laptop or desktop computer.
"The FireWire option was a must have because I use a G4 laptop and I needed a quick and easy way of getting 16 mic inputs straight into my computer. The FireWire works incredibly well - to the extent that I can't believe this process hasn't been made so easy before. I now have a desk that is not only portable but also really logical and simple to use. It does exactly what I want it to do and I'm very happy with my choice."
Apart from the latest Stereophonics album, Lowe has also worked on both live and studio projects with the Foo Fighters, Manic Street Preachers, Rod Stewart and Paul Weller. He has a small home studio, which is where his Onyx 1640 will be based when it isn't being used for live and rehearsal work.
