Q. Do I need to upgrade my Mackie or Logic Control?
A. Perhaps, but perhaps not. Really, it all boils down to what you are doing or plan to do with your Mackie Control or Logic Control. First, determine the Firmware Version of each of your units (main units AND extenders) - simply watch the display when you power up.
If you have a version 1.x Mackie or Logic Control (including extenders), there is a free MIDI download which will allow you to control all of the Mackie Control supporting DAWs AND Emagic Logic Audio.
If you have a version 1.x Mackie or Logic Control (including extenders) and wish to control Pro Tools via Mackie Control Universal's built-in HUI mode - you'll need to obtain a Mackie Control Universal Upgrade Kit.
If you have a version 2.0 Mackie Control or extender, we have a free MIDI download which will allow you to control all of the Mackie Control supporting DAWs, Emagic Logic Audio and Pro Tools.
If you have version 2.1.1 - you're already up to date.
See the top of this page for more details.
Q. Which Version do I own?
In order to tell which version you currently own, all you have to do is watch the display on your main unit or extender when you turn on the power. It will display the version of the firmware that is installed (eg. v1.01, v2.0, etc.).
Q. How do I upgrade my Mackie Control, Logic Control or Extender?
A. First, make sure that you DO need to upgrade (refer to the previous FAQ). Once you've determined that you need to upgrade your unit, you'll need to reserve an upgrade kit. Reserve your kit here.
Because there is limited supply of the upgrade kits, we are taking reservations. Once your upgrade kit becomes available, we will send you an email with instructions on how to obtain your kit. You will have 72 hours to respond before we release your kit to the next person in line.
The Mackie Control Universal Upgrade Kit includes a new processor chip, a Pro Tools Lexan overlay and installation instructions. You can either perform the upgrade yourself, or have a professional from the Mackie Service department perform the upgrade for you. You can also choose to have a third-party service technician perform the upgrade for you at your own risk.
Reserve your kit here.
Q. What is "HUI" and why should I care?
A. The term "HUI" stands for "Human User Interface" and is the name of Mackie's first MIDI controller product designed to work together with Pro Tools. The HUI used a specific set of MIDI messages, to which Digidesign "mapped" their software parameters in Pro Tools. With the new Mackie Control Universal firmware v2.1 installed, the Mackie Control (or Logic Control) can now "speak" the language of the original HUI and therefore can communicate directly with the HUI support that already exists in Pro Tools. In short, the Mackie Control Universal Upgrade Kit turns your control surface into a HUI so it can control Pro Tools.
Q. What versions of Pro Tools does Mackie Control Universal now support?
A. It works with Pro Tools software after version 4.1, including Pro Tools|HD, Pro Tools|24 Mix, Digi001, Digi002, and Mbox.
Q. Will I also need to upgrade my Mackie Control Universal Extender?
A. Yes. We offer one Mackie Control Universal Upgrade Kit that will work for either the main unit or the extender . Simply follow the instructions provided in the kit (same as the instructions for Mackie Control) if you wish to perform the upgrade yourself. Both the Mackie Control Extender and the Logic Control XT can be upgraded with this kit.
Q. Can I use Mackie Control Universal and Mackie Control Universal Extenders to control Pro Tools (or other DAWs) along with with my Mackie HUI or Baby HUI at the same time?
A. Pro Tools software allows up to four peripheral controllers and it doesn't care what controllers you use, as long as they are HUI compatible. You can use any combination of those four products to create a larger control surface . Each supported DAW has it's own limitations regarding control surface integration, so check with the software company for details.
Q. Why would I use a Mackie Control Universal over the ProControl?
A. Superior value for the money. The Mackie Control Universal supports the most professional feature set of any controller in its class. And unlike the ProControl, the Mackie Control Universal is compatible with the widest set of audio applications.
Q. How do I use the Mackie Control Universal with Pro Tools?
A. The first step is to make sure you have applied the new Pro Tools overlay on to Mackie Control Universal so that you can read all the Pro Tools-specific labels on the overlay. The next step is to download the Mackie Control Universal for Pro Tools User's Guide.
Q. Will performing this upgrade void my warranty on my Mackie Control or Logic Control?
A. Only if a specific problem arises that can be directly related to an incorrect upgrade procedure. By purchasing an Upgrade Kit and performing the upgrade yourself, you accept the responsibility of following the instructions as laid out by Mackie to prevent such problems from occurring.
If you are at all uncertain about your ability to perform this upgrade, you can choose for your Mackie Dealer or Service Center to do it for you. And, as usual, you can always send your unit to Mackie so the upgrade can be performed at the factory.
Q. How do I enable a Mackie Control Universal inside Pro Tools?
A. First, establish MIDI communication between your host computer and the Mackie Control Universal using OMS or other MIDI interface application. Once your computer can "see" the Mackie Control Universal, then go to the Peripherals Window under the Setup Menu in Pro Tools. Click on the "MIDI Controllers" tab and select "HUI" as your controller for Peripheral #1, and select the name of the active MIDI setup you created, and hit OK. The Mackie Control Universal should "wake up" and snap to place according to the position of the faders on the screen in your currently active session.
Q. I own a Logic Control and want to perform the upgrade. Can I do it?
A. At long last, yes you can. See the Mackie Control Upgrade Center for details.. |
