UPDATE – Mackie Website and Forum

March 13, 2013

We are happy to announce that www.mackie.com is up and running with full access to product information and file downloads like manuals, drivers, etc. Our Find a Dealer and Buy it Now services are also online. We sincerely apologize for any frustrations or inconveniences the recent outage may have caused. You will note that the Mackie forums remain down. We are working now to implement a modern knowledge base solution that will replace the Mackie forums. We will communicate more as new information arises.

  1. has anyone used the DLM 8 as a keyboard speaker for live performance in a small theater setting?

    • May be a little biased, but I have used the DLM as a keyboard monitor, though just in rehearsal. I am sure there’s enough wattage for a small theater setting at normal to high stage volume. Or are you not talking about a personal monitor? Are you amplifying just the keyboard and the other instruments are not in the PA?

      • I got one for you. I got the last update notification updated my ipad plugged it into my 1608 its been updating for 1 1/2 hours …. Nothing.. No movement on the status bar.. Customer service is closed, forum is down, i have a gig in 30 minutes and now i have no PA. If i power off the stage box will i loose all the shows i have saved? I cant access the manuel because the program is frozen on my ipad. Even though there is an abort button the manuel says not to use it. I sure hope you respond to this!

Thank you Mackie for a totally F##KED UP experience!

  2. As someone who is buying a brand new PA system and seriously considering the DL1608, I have to say that this decision to tank your own forums is one that is leaving a very bad taste in the mouths of your customers, myself included. Information in the modern age SHOULD NOT flow in only one direction, your company to us. In the Internet generation, forums allow a level of social accountability and the establishment of a community to discuss your products amongst ourselves in a reasonable fashion. Not allowing that medium to continue is causing a great degree of suspicion, rightfully so. You folks should very seriously consider re-establishing your forums. Thank you!

  3. As someone who just purchased a DL1608,and a Mackie customer for 18 years, I agree. Replacing the user forums would be a very bad idea. It will most likely hurt sales of the DL1608. I am not a forum member but I always read them before making a purchase and in the case of the DL1608 it was the main reason I pulled the trigger to buy the DL1608.

I started reading the DL1608 forum before the unit was available because I expected the 1.0 version to be about as buggy as it was. I finally pulled the trigger and bought when (1) the 1.3 release seemed to be stable enough to be usable and (2) I read on the forum that I could use the express router to play break music from the iPad, so one less piece of gear to carry. Without the forum, theres a good chance I’d still be waiting for the Beringer.

This past weekend I had some downtime and was planning to find an RTA application for the iPad that I could use to replace my rack RTA. There were a few older threads that discussed the various options, so just a simple matter of re-reading them and making the decision, but noooooooo……..

  4. This is one of the

The conversation about the dl1608 is still continuing outside your forums and that Mackie doesn’t want to be part of that is quite sad. Apparently a decade after “The Cluetrain manifesto” it appears that this group doesn’t possess a product manager that gets it at a basic level, actually to be charitable they probably do but their boss doesn’t:)

I own one and found the forums amazingly helpful in a way your own manuals / faqs were not so at the very least “pickling” the forum I.E., not allowing new posts in the interim was the least you could have done. You had a lot of people advocating your position and they reward for the time an effort assisting people to understand your mixer, poofed out of existence. That’s not a way to build community and I seriously hope you reconsider either recreating your own forum or heavily supporting third party ones that come along.

  5. It certainly looks like the decision to tank the forums was not a conscious choice by Mackie and probably the result of whoever was at the switch in their IT dept not really knowing what they were doing. After all, the entire website was down for several days. That sounds to me like a server crash that no one could fix and a forum that was not backed up properly.

For a technical company like Mackie to have an IT department that is so ill prepared for a server crash is a bit like a cruise ship company that tries to cut corners by sending out ships without experienced plumbers, electricians and pipefitters on board – and we all see how that worked out.

    • Kevin, I am not saying it was a conscious one. in fact, with all the malicious crap going around the web, it could have been, as you suggested, someone falling asleep at the wheel and the site getting crashed, or just lack of updates to keep things running smoothly, Hell, maybe the webmaster downloaded some bad, virus-laden porn to his PC and that tanked the forums.

Whatever the cause (and let’s assume for a second that all the posts, threads, and discussion is gone forever from the forum) you don’t just abandon the forum concept in favor of basically a one-way flow of information to the community at large. You dust yourself off (well Mackie does, I mean), apologize for the inconvenience of all the lost info and down time, and you rebuild the forums from scratch if you have to.

And again, this is assuming that the posts and forum history is all gone completely and forever. It may not be. But either way, it is better to start a new forum from scratch than to abandon the entire paradigm, is my point. When you abolish a forum community as a retailer that relies on a community you alienate a ton of people. I mean, look at me: I was all but ready to order the DL1608, and this regardless of the forum crash! You see, I can excuse a forum crash and even the loss of all our posts. But a company that uses that as the impetus to abolish one of the most valuable media tools in the modern age…a tool which facilitates the exchange of ideas and information?

      Just inexcusable.

  6. Hey since there is no ovum I will ask this here. Can you copy a channel from one strip to another? Say I have my vocal channel for my mic on channel 13 for my full band but want it on channel 1 for an acoustic duo with the same EQ, compression and other settings. I was able to sort of import it from one snapshot to another by clicking the little safe mode button then loading the other snapshot. But how do I transfer it from ch 13 to ch 1 without inputting all the settings manually again?

I don’t own the mixer but I do have the app on my iPad.

      • If you save your vocal setting as a “Preset” you will be able to use it on another other snapshot…Works Great as I do the same thing with our 7piece band and can use the same eq settings, etc, for an acoustic gig

    • Paul – I dont believe that there is any way to copy just a single channel, other than saving as a snapshot, in which case the settings came back on the same channel.

As to your previous point, you’re right. Even if the old forum content is gone for good, Mackie needs to keep the forums. Especially for the DL1608. Version 1.3 is stable enough to be usable. Its still buggy and missing key features, but there were enough workarounds in the forums to make it usable. Plus, its pretty obvious that Mackie doesnt work weekends. There was a lot of good stuff on the forum though, it would be a real shame if it was all lost for good. Whoever is responsible should go back to working in the mail room.

I really like my DL, and I was lucky to purchase it about a month before the forums crashed. I was up and running in less than a day, but I had to spend some time reading and re-reading the forum to overcome various shortcomings, and up until last weekend, I was still learning new stuff. I wouldnt go back though. Even if I want to I cant go back – I already sold my board, snake and a bunch of outboard gear! I’ve almost covered the cost of the DL and iPad, but whether the DL will be worth anything in a couple of months is TBD. While Mackie sleeps, Presonus and Berringer appear to be hustling.

One of the old forum members has started a new forum. Not yet as informative as the old forums, but hopefully it will be soon as more people find out about it.

Its pretty sad that it took Mackie’s IT department almost a week to respond to a server crash, while a Random Dude was able to get a new forum up and running in hours. That is the difference between ‘tech support’ and a user forum

      • CM is right Kevin, you can easily save a single channel as a preset which is then available in any position and snapshot you choose.

Agreed with everybody above about the forums, it’s a huge shame that Mackie have chosen to can the forums, they held a wealth of information and were my goto place for questions about the DL. Very disappointed indeed :-(

  7. Wowsa. I only recently joined the Mackie forums, came by today looking for a little help, only to discover more drama. Dang. I love my DL1608, but ran into a problem last night at a gig in that it wouldn’t go wireless, even though the router was connected properly and being recognized by the iPad. It showed up as a wireless device in the Master Fader app, but could not communicate with the base when undocked. I’ve used it wirelessly before with no issues. I was hoping someone might be able to advise me as to what I might have been doing wrong…

    • Our tech support department is here for just that purpose. They are all trained audio engineer and know the gear up and down. You can email them at techmail@mackie.com or if you are in the US, you can also call 800.898.3211. Phone calls are sometimes extremely helpful when troubleshooting gear as they can sit with you and make sure all is well.

      • Your tech support department are probably wonderful (I haven’t had the need to find out yet) but you don’t work weekends and evenings, you probably have a lot of calls/mails to deal with, and so, consequently, I’d think it reasonable to expect a reply to take a working day or two. The inhabitants of Mackie DL1608 Forum were around 24/7, often answered a question in hours (or even minutes) even at weekends and or late at night. The info was reliable as they all were DL1608 users, if they weren’t sure of the answer somebody would just fire up a DL and try it out, and being involved was fun. Gutted Their gone.

    • Make sure that your router goes through its powerup sequence before turning the mixer on. If you turn the mixer on too soon after the router, or put them both on the same switch, the mixer wont ever see the router, even though the iPad will see the router. Yep, that’s pretty lame, but the workaround isnt too bad

BTW – a new version (non-mackie) version of the DL1608 forum is here. Not as much info as old forums, but much better than nothing
      http://cacophony.aspinock.com/index.php?board=26.0

      • Ah, that helps! I believe I turned the mixer on before the router was powered up. I’ll test and see if that does the trick. Thank you!

  8. I’m very sad to hear that Mackie has taken the very short-sighted approach of removing their user Forums. I think Mackie needs to grow a little thicker skin. If the company can’t take the heat of criticism from users who purchase their products then maybe they need to look hard at their quality control and user input or just close their doors! This has seriously changed my opinion of Mackie and future Mackie purchases!

  9. I haven’t been able to use the DL1608 as of yet but through the promotion of it I can tell that it is something that I am interested in. The only problem that I seem to have with it is that there are to few channels on it. Most of my live sound applications are for churches and for the sound man to be able to sit in the congregation without eating up pew space is what most pastors are looking for. But they use a 24 to 32 channels on a normal bases. So are there any plans to increase the amount of channels in a future product? The need is there.

  10. Having been a forum member for many years (initially growing to a ***** star member then after a major Forum crash a couple of years ago I was appointed a Jedi Knight — or something), like most of you I am stunned that Mackie (Loud) would decide to close the forums.

Although I do not own one of the Mackie DL TOYS (and never would/will — much prefer the new Behringer DX-32 desk) I have (and still) owned numerous Mackie consoles and associated pieces of equipment and have always found the forums to be the best possible source of knowledge.

My two main forum areas (d8B and TT24) have been amazing and the guys on the forum in the case of the d8B actually established a most comprehensive database on the desk and when the desk was withdrawn from sale they completely re-designed the desk as a MK-II or MK-III with full drawings, etc, while another memberrecently took it further and designed the desk to act as a major HUI console thus giving the desk a new lease on life, while a very dedicated group of us worked as Beta testers for the excellent TT-24 desk and its associated equipment.

It looks as if all of this is now gone — frightening what happens when accountants take over the running of a company.

One positive thing I will say is that the guys in the Tech support section have always been excellent and I presume will continue to be so.

For anyone from the old d8B forum you might like to look at the following forum which became established when the Mackie Forum crashed the first time was was down for many weeks.

  11. I think the problem is mackie themself. They let us think we can talk about the software of the dl1608. What we want and so more.
But they did not think about the negative people. Me as forum member do not read the negative but only the helpfull threats.
Like pictures about case and other things. I liked it very much.
Mackie is not a company who want to hear what people want. They want to sell and a lot as it can. Sorry my english is not so good i am a holland guy…….

  12. Don’t worry about your English, Edgard. I speak a sum total of ONE language, so I have a profound respect for anyone intelligent and dedicated enough to become fluent in languages not their native languages and who can communicate at a high enough level to be understood. ;)

I hope you are wrong about Mackie, because truth be told, if their motives for removing the forum are this duplicitous then they are not a very good company and are more than a little duplicitous.

So I prefer to hope that Mackie is just having a temporary lapse of intelligent business acumen.

  13. I have recently purchased a DL1608 and wanted to share my experience.
I set it up at home and used headphones as monitors, everything worked as expected.
I take it out to a charity gig I was doing the sound for as I needed a few more inputs, so I took the DL1608 along and then things started to get weird.
I plugged in my iPod into channels 15 and 16 and the hardware recogised them and were flashing green, HOWEVER, the ‘VU Meters’ were not showing any signal. When I turned the P.A. on all I got was a huge amount of digital noise swamping everything and again no signal.
This was most embarrassing as people were arriving and I hadn’t even have the P.A. set up. In the end I just used my old P.A. and stuck the DL1608 in a window frame and ended up starting thirty minutes late. The organisers were NOT happy.
I set up the same arrangement at home the next day and it worked perfectly. But really who cares, I wanted it to work at the charity function yesterday.

    • Did you test it at home again?
And for what reason you did not use music on your ipad?
Not to blame you but i want to learn about it. I use my samsung s3 the same as you did with the ipod but it was good.
      For sure no rumble sound…..

      • Yes I did and surprisingly it worked.
I tried at an open mic and yet again the noise appeared when I connected it to the graphic equaliser via XLR to 1/4″. I ended up going XLR to XLR directly to the powered speakers. Couldn’t get the wireless to work at the open mic, yet it works fine at home. Rather frustrated.
I’ll keep trying, just haven’t found a pattern yet.

  14. Weird that it worked fine when you got home. Have you called Mackie tech support? I would be hard-pressed to trust this unit if it turns out you were doing everything right and it still crapped out on you but is working now. I wouldn’t want to trust this unit under those conditions and would ask to have Mackie send you another.

  15. I have a simple question: Is there anyway you can turn off all outputs in a few steps.
My issue is mixing at an open-mic. They play three songs and they unplug and another set starts with plugging in. The prevent noise when the leads are unplugged/plugged in I need to turn off both the LR and A1 quickly.
    Any ideas?

  16. hello friends, I have a table cfx16 and I have a problem, chances you actually give him the electric diagram?’ll be grateful. Thank you.igo.

ola amigos, gostaria de saber se alguém tem o diagrama elétrico da placa da mesa mencionada? muito obrigada. se alguém pode me enviar por email ficarei agradecido.

      • I noticed you have not replied to my reply/request for a solution to the update hangup. It isn’t addressed in the manual despite my lengthy discussion with customer service on the last update problem. Mackie seems to be more interested in putting in digital regurgitations of analog representations in the app rather than addressing real bugs or maintaining a comprehensive manual.

PS and PO’d… It’s not like you don’t have my email address!
        CJ

  17. I just began a new postion and my knowledge of sound boards and related tech is limited. We have a Mackie digital snake and the COMM [check] indicator light periodically blinks, goes out and comes back on. No idea why this is happening. Thanks for any help.

  18. Hi , I purchased a dl1608 a couple of weeks ago and have since upgraded apps to 1.4 and 1.0 for my i5 .no issues at all with drop outs or lockup a etc . Have had it out in the field in all sorts of situations and love it ! .have ordered 2 more . Just gotta work out how to bolt them together with router etc ..

  19. Is there a forum for the ppm-1008 powered mixer? If not, I was wondering about threshold. I gig in small places and if I put the level up to high I get feedback. My meters never get higher than 10. What should I do?

  20. Isn’t there a way you can also pair two channels on the dl1608 software program thr version 1.4.1 which is recently launched , i am sure they can do something like that, pairing channels like for stereo ect

  21. Dear Mackie guys, I try to get in touch with you for three weeks with no results… I purchased (3 weeks ago!) a license for version 5.1 of my D8B on mackie.com … can you please tell me what should I do to get my code? I don’t see anything in my.mackie, it’s like I never bought it but I have given you 174$!
Someone tell me to get in touch with Beno but don’t have any contact of this guy … I hope we can solve this thing asap.
    Best regards, Bruno Falconi.

  22. As an owner of a Mackie digital xbus I used to find the old forums an invaluable support tool for support for this product from other users. I am very disapointed it is no longer available. Is there anywhere there is a cache of the old form as there are a number of posts I really would like to have access to especially since my xbus decided to not work today (yet again). Look forward to your reply

    • We are working now on updates to the Mackie site including a knowledge base that will house archived information. Until then, our tech support department is happy to work with you to sort out any issues you are having. Consider calling them at 800.898.3211 or emailing them at techmail@mackie.com
