Part of this trip included some really cool Audio 101 Clinics at select Allans Music + Billy Hyde locations (Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney).

Mackie Audio 101 Clinics are open to the public and there were many interested audio people attending, but many of the store sales staff who wanted more audio knowledge attended as well. As the name implies, these clinics cover audio basics, including how to understand gain stage, setting levels a-la-Mackie, managing parametric EQs, matching mixer output to amp levels, dynamics, AC power considerations, speaker placement, managing stage volumes, etc.

There was tons of interaction, questions and hands-on exercises, as attendees all came up to help set up portions of the mix for the live band we had on-hand for demonstration purposes. Of course, Mackie gear was used for the clinic, including VLZ3 and ProFX mixers.

At the end of every clinic, one lucky winner walked away with a new Mackie Thump TH-12A Powered Loudspeaker for their personal system.

Thanks to our friends both old and new at Music Link Australia and Allans Music + Billy Hyde for having us out!

Two decades later, the annual WorldMUN conference has grown to become a week-long event, with more than 2,200 college and graduate students from more than 65 nations attending the 2011 conference in Singapore.

At this year's WorldMUN, Singapore-based Mastana Entertainment provided high-end audio and video systems for social events throughout the conference, including a massive Mackie HDA-based sound system for the WorldMUN 2011 Ice Breaker Party at the Greek Theatre, at the foot of the iconic Singapore Flyer.

The system was centered around Mackie HDA two-way 12-inch powered line array cabinets, along with HD1521 15-inch two-way powered loudspeakers. The system was augmented by 18 SRM450 two-way powered loudspeakers, with low frequency reinforcement handled by Mackie's HD1801 powered subwoofers. Pioneer and Denon DJ gear and an Allen and Heath console completed the system.

WorldMUN was the most recent in a series of events that has seen Mastana Entertainment grow from a modest startup company to one of Singapore's leading events services companies. As Surinder Mastana, the company's Chief Engineer and Event Consultant, explains, the Mackie gear has been a big part of the company's growing profile.

"For us, it has been the realization of a dream to bring our own unique blend of music and mixes to the regional party scene, and having great quality equipment is a big part of our success," says Mastana. "The Mackie HDAs are truly one of the best sounding powered array speakers available. They are so fast and easy to deploy - hassle free, plug and play, and their definition....simply wow! They sound incredible. We can't wait to get more of them."
Recorded in December at Stone Gossard's Studio Litho in Seattle with engineer Randall Dunn (Cave Singers, Black Mountain, Boris), the band conceived the majority of the material while on the road last summer with Primus, Gogol Bordello and Garage A Trois. The release of Operation Long Leash is surrounded by a 15-date tour that begins in New Orleans and heads north up the East Coast.

If the moniker Dead Kenny Gs doesn’t say it all at first glance, an initial listen to the latest album quickly makes their intentions clear. The trio is committed to musical subversion of the highest order. Exploring a muso obsession of musical styles and sonic colors, The Dead Kenny Gs have both the courage and the chops to realize their wildest aural fantasies. One moment they draw inspiration from punk legends The Minutemen, while the next finds them embracing the spirit of jazz giant Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and still another the influence of indie rock progenitors Deerhoof; yet always remaining purely DKGs. It’s not just music informing the band’s voice either, but an obsession with political conspiracy in American history. The album’s title, Operation Long Leash, comes from the clandestine CIA operation in the late ‘40s to fund Abstract Expressionism as a means for Western culture to undermine the conformist ideals of the Soviet Union during the early years of the Cold War.

Operation Long Leash opens with the sprawling instrumental art rock "Devil's Playground" followed by the skewed go-go funk of "Black Truman (Harry The Hottentot)," featuring special guest Charlie Hunter on guitar. Over the course of the album's ten tracks, they'll blast through avant instrumental punk rockers spiked with Balkan and Klezmer music like "Melvin Jones" and "Sweatbox." The experimental doom metal dirge "Black Death" includes a cathartic lyrical onslaught from Mike D. that turns his past struggles with heroin into a metaphor for the Gulf Coast oil spill and the United States' addiction to oil. In the hands of these three musicians, the disparate elements coalesce into a complete vision, fearless in its creation and explosive upon arrival. In the words of Skerik: "Dead Kenny Gs is what happens when people listen to Bad Brains and Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sunn O))) and Milt Jackson, Dead Kennedys and John Coltrane, Melt Banana and Fela Kuti."

TOUR SCHEDULE

March 4 | D.B.A. | New Orleans, LA
March 5 | Donna's | New Orleans, LA
March 7 | Engine Room | Tallahassee, FL
March 8 | Pour House | Charleston, SC
March 9 | Five Spot | Atlanta, GA
March 10 | Mo Daddy’s | Asheville, NC
March 11 | Cosmic Charlie's | Lexington, KY
March 12 | Rex Theater | Pittsburgh, PA
March 13 | Beachland Tavern | Cleveland, OH
March 14 | Bullfrog Brewery | Williamsport, PA
March 16 | The Dover Brick House | Dover, NH
March 17 | Brooklyn Bowl | New York, NY
March 18 | North Star | Philadelphia, PA
March 19 | The Jewish Mother | Norfolk, VA
March 20 | Martin's Downtown | Roanoke, VA

http://www.thedeadkennygs.com/

For more info on The Dead Kenny Gs,
please contact Kevin Calabro at Royal Potato Family:
royalpotatofamily@gmail.com / 718.369.6567

Delivering the perfect balance of power, portability and price, the new 400-watt, 2-way 12˝ Thump Series loudspeaker is perfect for any application that demands high-output and professional sound without breaking the budget.

"Mackie is well known for delivering professional monitoring solutions at affordable prices," remarked Mackie product manager, Matt Redmon. "Our new MRmk2 monitors deliver on all fronts, from an extended low-frequency response unmatched in their category, to the clear definition of mids and highs upon which engineers stake their reputations."

Mackie MRmk2 studio monitors feature all-new professional transducers specifically designed to match their respective amplification. Both models employ a 1˝ neodymium magnet-driven soft dome tweeter featuring ferro-fluid cooling to help protect against power compression during wide dynamic playback. The 5.25˝ (MR5mk2) and 8˝ (MR8mk2) hyperbolic-curved cone woofers reduce severe cone resonances, drastically minimizing distortion.

The powerful, precision Class A/B amplifier section features XLR, TRS and RCA connectivity, along with user-adjustable acoustic controls for simple room correction. The robust cabinet is rear-ported, reducing distortion, and features an optimally-sized custom Waveguide and molded baffle, offering balance to the HF / LF content while increasing both the stereo imaging and depth of field.
