Studio Monitors
I don't have any 20 year old mixers, or 10 year old studio monitors, but I do have a brand new pair of Mackie MR8's that I'm extremely impressed with.
I changed cities this year and as a result my computer is no longer next to my TV / 5.1 setup, therefore I was on the hunt for something new, something special to use with my computer.
Since I've moved into an apartment I didn't want a subwoofer, or a 5.1 setup - I just wanted good, clear, rich, 2.0 sound, and that doesn't exist in the "computer speaker" market line. I hunted around and went from model to model, some speakers were cheaper, some were uglier, all promised awesome sound.
After narrowing my choices via research, user reviews, and some warnings of product recalls for other companies, I ended up with Mackie. I found a dealer who whole heartedly recommended them and even gave me a great discount, just because he was a nice guy!
Initially I was scared by the shear size and presence of the MR8's, nervous to plug them in. After getting over those nerves for the past month I've been enjoying absolutely amazing sound, you can hear every instrument, every string pluck, from highs to lows its amazing how good the sound is, for something a lot cheaper them my computer and LCD monitor.
I overwhelming recommend Mackie studio monitors, you'll be listening to your library of music all over again, just to hear how awesome it sounds.
