VLZ
In 1999 I started The Jam Lab, an Open Source recording project. We just jam for a few hours and sometimes great music just happens. We chop out the good stuff and post it on our web, www.jamlab.us. Players from all over the world download our tracks, add new parts, and we post the new versions on our web as well.
A Mackie 1604VLZ is the heart of my project studio. We use it for all signal routing, pre-mix the drums down into two stereo record channels, and mix the headphones for each of the players.
Shortly after I bought my Mackie 1604 in Orlando, FL lightening struck my home and took out all my electronics. OUCH! It hit so hard one 120 VAC electrical outlet lay hanging near the floor. It was blown completely out of the duplex. Insurance is a good thing.
I sent my Mackie 1604 back to the factory and hoped all would work out. We have to self host the site because I can't afford the bandwidth of the two-three thousand downloads each month. So, my 1604 is also attached to my web server. It stays on 24 hours a day and 365 days per year. Can you believe it has been 10 years now? This thing has been on the whole time. It has never let me down, ever! That is longer than 6 versions of the band, three different audio interfaces, and thousands of recording hours.
My friends and non-musicians can hardly believe the sound quality. They all think our tracks sound like they came out of some expensive big time studio. No, it's just us jamming our brains out with the 1604 and an 8 track audio interface.
Live long and JAM ON,
Kurt Angel
